The opportunity:
Smurfit Westrock (SW) Analytical Services Group supports the company’s paperboard, and packaging testing needs for customers, manufacturing locations, and research initiatives. A scientist’s role in the lab is to perform a variety of qualitative and quantitative analysis on samples submitted to the lab in support of business needs.
How you will impact WestRock:
- Demonstrate initiative to develop new test methods and learn complex instruments.
- Perform analysis and characterization of the samples submitted to the analytical group.
- Interpret laboratory results and present reports to cross-functional teams with quick turnaround.
- Able to perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ensure the oversee analytical instrumentation and perform routine calibration, troubleshooting and maintenance
- Train other teammates on instruments as needed
- Actively participate in and support the SW safety program.
What you need:
- PhD or master’s degree in chemistry/chemical engineering or related field is required.
- 3-5 years of experience with GC-MS, Headspace and Pyr-GC-MS, sample preparation, quantitative data analysis is required
- Experience with Shimadzu and Agilent GC-MS systems is a plus
- Knowledge of paper and packaging science is valuable
- Familiarization with FT-IR, ICP, UV-vis and/or HPLC is a plus.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities and demonstrate initiative.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Minimal travel (<10%)
